E-government: networking New Zealanders with government

This seminar was presented in Auckland on 10 March 2005 to members of the NZLL, SLIS North and LIANZA, and guests. The Director of the State Services Commission's E-government Unit, Laurence Millar, discussed the achievement of the 2004 goal, and the strategic direction and work programme required to reach the goals outlined for 2007 and 2010 as outlined in the E-government Strategy. He focused on the results of the first major assessment of e-government across the Public Service. The e-government programme has now been under way for four years, and has recently reached the first major goal of the E-government Strategy, that "by June 2004, the Internet will be the dominant means of enabling ready access to government'. Mr Millar covered the 'supply side' of e-government: the achievement of agencies in providing information and services to people over the Internet. He also talked about the 'demand side': specifically, the recent survey of 5,000 New Zealanders and their use of the Internet to contact government; and the relationship of the programme with the Draft Digital Strategy.
